This hobby provides any builder to challenge themselves to build a car, airplane, tank, truck, motorcycle, figurines, and the list goes on. For example, I like to build military and automobile kits. My kits are mainly "box stock"(no special details to kit, just strictly built by instructions). But, I am finding myself trying to expand my skills by adding special details to a regular kit, such as weathering and adding items to kits to make them more life-like.
The hobby provides educational value. It teaches you how to follow written instructions. A builder will learn about what he is building. It just happens that way. Moreover, the builder is forced to learn about what he/she is building. You learn about each part and what each part is responsible for when your gluing it together. Therefore, unlike playing video games and being a "zombie" in front of the television, model kit building is fun & educational.
I found out I am not alone when it comes to this hobby. YouTube introduced me to hundreds of model kit builders. The YouTube model kit community opened up new, fresh ideas for building kits and new friendships. I truly enjoy interacting with fellow builders and watching their new builds form into works of art. Its absolutely amazing what some of these builders can do with plastic(styrene) model kits and bring them to life!
Give model kit or scale model kit building a try. It may open up a skill you never knew you had. I believe its one of the most enjoyable, educational, and affordable hobbies there is. Enjoy some of the videos! I look forward to meeting you and your first model kit build. Take it easy.
